In response to tragic structural failures in recent years that have claimed the lives of thousands, the Indian government has launched a massive campaign to ensure the structural safety of its building stock. The Committee for Structural Safety (CSS) was established by the Central Government and is advising state governments on how to make buildings safe, with an emphasis on identifying and solving the causes of structural deficiencies.


The importance of structural safety is often overlooked, especially when compared to the other aspects of a building. However, structural safety is just as important as everything else, since it is the foundation of the rest of the building, and determines how the building will behave in various situations. For example, if a structure is not properly designed, it may collapse in an earthquake, and this can have dire consequences for the people in and around.
